Jyoti Chopra is the Head of Global Citizenship and Sustainability and Chief Diversity Officer for BNY Mellon. She joined the company in 2012 and is based in New York City. Jyoti is responsible for leading the company’s comprehensive award-winning diversity and inclusion program and promoting a culture of inclusion that creates pathways for the continued recruitment, development and advancement of a diverse workforce. Her responsibilities include overseeing BNY Mellon’s diversity strategy and execution, leading gender initiatives and employee resource groups, advancing internal diversity training and hiring, and serving on the company’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Council, led by BNY Mellon Chairman and CEO Gerald Hassell. She is a member of BNY Mellon’s Operating Committee and is the company’s representative to the Global Talent and Diversity Council of the Asia Society. She serves on the boards of the BNY Mellon Foundation (New York) and the BNY Mellon Foundation of South Western Pennsylvania. She oversees the company’s corporate social responsibility, philanthropy and social finance areas and manages the corporate art collection.
Previously, Jyoti served as the global leader for communications and public relations at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, where she was responsible for external relations, executive and internal communications. In 2011, she initiated and spearheaded the development of Deloitte’s first global diversity report. She joined Deloitte in February 2009 working for the Office of the CEO and the Global Chief of Staff where she was responsible for leading and managing strategic projects and supporting the Global CEO and Executive team.
Jyoti worked at Merrill Lynch from 1998 until 2009. She was Managing Director and head of communications for the Americas and the Global Banking divisions at Merrill Lynch. Jyoti was responsible for strategic communications and related plans, programs and initiatives with Americas and bank business areas. She led and managed the marketing and communications integration of First Republic Bank, which was acquired by Merrill Lynch in September 2007 ($1.8 billion acquisition with 2,000 employees). Previously, Jyoti was head of the Multicultural Group at Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management. This role included the development, strategic planning and execution of the wealth management business and marketing and client acquisition activities targeting diverse investors and business owners. These efforts focused on the affluent African American, Hispanic, LGBT, Native American, South Asian, Special Needs, and Women’s markets and centered on community relations, strategic partnership development, and recruitment and retention programs. Jyoti was responsible for market planning, new business origination, community leadership, philanthropic support and client acquisition and relationship development for these diverse and emerging markets. From 1999 until 2002, Jyoti was director of client acquisition for Merrill Lynch Direct and responsible for new account acquisition, business development, portal alliances and marketing for Merrill Lynch’s and online trading platform (www.mldirect.ml.com).
Jyoti served as Merrill Lynch’s representative to and Chaired the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Diversity Committee from 2004-2009. She served as the firm’s representative to the SIFMA Investor Education Committee from 1998-2000.
Before joining Merrill Lynch, Jyoti was a writer and media consultant who covered human development and issues affecting women and children at the United Nations. From 1993 until 1997, she developed an award winning global media campaign at the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which entailed extensive educational outreach, global communications, advocacy and philanthropic work.
Jyoti was born and raised in London, England. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Honors degree in Journalism from New York University. She completed the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in 2002. She holds an MBA with distinction from the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
Jyoti has served on the boards of the Princeton YWCA and the Princeton Healthcare System. She is presently a member of the Diversity Advisory Board for Toyota Motor North America.
